Treatments
The treatments for malaria depend upon these elements:
· The strain type of malaria
· Severity of responses due to malaria
· Age
· Pregnancy
Malaria has been become resistant to the medicines found over the past 17th century such as Peruvian bark and other plants. New anti-malarial medicines were introduced since the resistance of malaria was getting stronger. Medicines such as Chloroquire (Aralen), Quinine (Qualaquin), Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), Mefloquine and combination of atoraquore and proguanil (Malarone) were used to treat malaria.
Prevention
Even though lots of treatments were discovered, due to the high disguise mechanism and rapid resistance for malaria, doctors are having difficulty introducing vaccines. The phase three trial vaccine or “The world’s most clinically advanced malaria vaccine candidate” has been introduced in Kisumu, Kenya and monitored carefully to examine the affectivity. Almost a million people can be saved if this is proven to be effective.
Preventative measures can be taken such as:
· Insect repellant (Highly recommended at night)
· Mosquito-nets
· Long sleeved clothing
If in travel, it is advisable to see a doctor for a prescription medicine before the flight.
· Talk to the doctor of which medicine is the best
· If medicine was advised, take it before, during and after the trip
To prevent mosquito bites:
· Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants and hats
· Use mosquito repellants where affected
· Stay and sleep in screened and air-conditioned rooms
· Use mosquito-nets if the location is outside
· If bitten, avoid scratching the bite and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce itching
